Instrumental Ensemble Auditions

Fall 2018 Large Instrumental Ensemble Auditions

Students receiving a School of Music scholarship must audition for ensembles as specified in their scholarship letter. Non-scholarship students should audition for commercial or classical ensembles according to their major.

Auditions for Orchestra Winds, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Band

Auditions for Wind Ensemble, Concert Band*, and Symphony Orchestra Winds will take place on Monday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 21 in McAfee Concert Hall. All woodwind, brass, and percussion majors and minors must audition for placement; however, students from all majors are welcome and encouraged to participate in the audition process. Each audition will last approximately five minutes and will be heard by ensemble faculty and applied faculty as available.  In order to provide a fair and efficient placement, auditions will be blind and based upon the performance of the musical excerpts alone.  Please plan to be present during the scheduled time for your instrument.  When you arrive, check in at the desk outside the door, and you will be assigned a number.  When it is your turn, simply enter the room and play the excerpts as you have prepared them in order.  No communication will take place between the panel and the student.  If you have a conflict with one of the scheduled times, please notify Dr. Kraus ( so that you may be included during one of the other instrument time slots. 

*Concert Band enrollment is open to all students on campus.  Music majors must participate in the audition process above. Non-music majors who wish to play only in Concert Band are not required to play a formal audition and do not need to download and prepare the excerpts. Please contact Dr. Kraus ( to indicate your interest in Concert Band, and you may register when you see your advisor.

String Auditions

Thursday, August 23, 3:00pm-9:00pm in McAfee Hall

All String Students (Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass) must audition for placement in the Symphony Orchestra and String Chamber Orchestra. Audition excerpts are now available for strings. For the audition, students must download and prepare audition excerpts below. If you do not wish to audition, you may play in String Chamber Orchestra without an audition. Auditions for Winds & Strings for Small Jazz Groups I,II and III

Wednesday, August 22, 6:00-8:00 PM in the Dynamo Room

Jazz Small groups consist of mixed woodwind, brass, and strings with rhythm section. Emphasis is placed on improvisation in commercial styles. Auditions are open to all students on campus. Rhythm section players should see information below regarding “Rhythm Section Auditions”

Auditions for Bruin Blast Pep Band

Thursday, August 23, 6:00-9:00 PM

Bruin Blast performs at all home basketball games and travels to NCAA tournaments. Bruin Blast will hold auditions (for new members only) for piccolo, flute, clarinet, alto/tenor saxophone, trumpet, mellophone, trombone, baritone, tuba, bass guitar, and drumset on Thursday, August 23 from 6:00-9:00 PM in room 303 of Belmont Heights. Each audition will consist of the concert B flat and F major scales, a two-octave chromatic scale, and a short sight reading excerpt. Drummers will be asked to play in rock, jazz, funk, and latin styles. School instruments (mellophone, baritone, sousaphone, and drumset) will be provided at the audition. A bass guitar amplifier will be available for use. Course credit is not available. Students receive a stipend for participation. Contact for more information.

All music majors must be registered for all ensembles in which they participate (one for credit and all others for no credit under MUN 4895. Check classfinder for details.)

Instrument Checkout

School-owned instruments are available. If you are in need of an instrument, please contact the appropriate ensemble director to obtain an instrument checkout form. You will need to take the form to the music facilities office in the Massey Performing Arts Center and fill out the appropriate paperwork. If you require a locker for large instruments, please contact April Simpkins via email ( or visit her desk in the School of Music Office of the Wilson Music Building. If you require an instrument for the audition, you must make appropriate contacts prior to August 20.
