John Pell has been on the faculty of Belmont University since 1978 serving as the Coordinator of Guitar Studies. He is a member of the Belmont Camerata and the Belmont Faculty Jazz Ensemble and teaches commercial and classical guitar. Mr. Pell studied at Boston University and Berklee School of Music.
Mr. Pell is an active performer as a freelance guitarist as well as a composer and arranger. He has given numerous concerts and clinics throughout the United States, Germany, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In 1975, Mr. Pell recorded and toured with Dolly Parton and performed on her television show 'Dolly.' He was consultant, composer, and associate producer for the National Geographic Society Recording Division in 1977, and the following year was composer and arranger on Chet Atkin's First Nashville Guitar Quartet album. From 1979-1983 Mr. Pell was a staff musician with WSM radio on 'The Waking Show' and a staff musician with WSMV's daily television show 'Channel Four Magazine' hosted by Charlie Chase. He was awarded 1986-87 Composer of the Year by the Nashville Teachers Association, and in 1995 was presented a 15 year Distinguished Service Award from Belmont University. His diverse performance appearances include: Marvin Gaye, Eddy Arnold, Floyd Cramer, Joe Wise, Neil Hefti, James Galway, Pat Boone, Ron Huff, and others. He has been a winner of the Chet Atkin's International Guitar Festival, and has also been nominated for a Grammy in the 'Spoken Word' category. Mr. Pell has been published in National Geographic Society and Guitar Magazine, and has written numerous works for the fundamentals of guitar and improvisation and harmonic analysis. He is a member of ASCAP, NARAS, IAJE, Phi Mu Alpha, and American Federation of Musicians.
Recently Mr. Pell was a soloist with the Nashville Symphony, and has been a yearly soloist at the Centennial Parks Concert Series and Metro Parks Community Concert Series in Nashville. He is currently Musical Director of Contemporary Services at Temple Obai Shalom and has been since 1992. Mr. Pell was just recently the 2002 recipient of Leadership Honoree from Vanderbilt University's Peabody College.
