Dean Cynthia Curtis



Cynthia Curtis Dr. Cynthia Curtis is Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. As a member of the Belmont faculty since 1980, Dr. Curtis served as Coordinator of Music Education and Director of Graduate Studies in Music Education prior to her appointment as Acting Dean of the School of Music in 1991 and Dean in 1992.

During her tenure as Dean, Dr. Curtis has led the School of Music at Belmont University through a period of significant growth in which the school has now doubled in size. During this time, Dr. Curtis has also played an integral part in securing benefactors and overseeing $5.8 million in School of Music renovations and building projects. She has formed 'Friends of the School of Music' a community based advocacy board active in fund raising for the School of Music and has directed a long range planning process for the school which has included refining academic programs, expanding technology, increasing scholarship funds, developing study abroad opportunities (Dresden, Moscow, Angers and Florence), implementing five new Master of Music Programs and solidifying the operations of music preparatory programs through Belmont Academy.

With her primary expertise in early childhood music education, Dr. Curtis has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of early childhood, elementary and middle school music education. She has been especially active in promoting music education through her role as Dean of the Tennessee Arts Academy from 1986-1991 in which she guided the nationally recognized summer program for arts teachers into success under the sponsorship of the Tennessee State Department of Education. Dr. Curtis has served as a public school music teacher, music therapist, music clinician, and church choir director. A graduate of Spring Hill College and Baylor University, she completed her Ph.D. at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1998, Dr. Curtis was appointed Dean of Belmont's College of Visual and Performing Arts, expanding her duties to also coordinate the Department of Art and the Department of Theatre and Dance. Currently Dr. Curtis is active as Belmont's representative to the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). She is an NASM accreditation evaluator, past member and chair of NASM's Ethics Committee and has both presented and moderated sessions at national NASM conferences.
