Belmont Alumnus Publishes Web Programming Book
Nicholas Williams is the newly published author of "Professional Java for Web Applications," a comprehensive guide to the creation of Java web applications for the enterprise. Wrox, a division of John Wiley and Sons featuring books "written for programmers by programmers," released the 936-page volume in March 2014. Williams extends gratitude to three of his Belmont professors in his dedication page of the book, specifically mentioning Dr. Joyce Crowell, Dr. Bill Hooper, and Dr. Sarah Ann Fleming, all faculty members in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
Williams, a 2009 graduate of Belmont, was a double major in Computer Science and Audio Engineering Technology. In 2010 he was selected as "Programmer of the Year" by the Nashville Technology Council. He currently works as a Software Engineer for UL Workplace Health and Safety, a division of Underwriters' Laboratories.
Grayson Carroll graduated from Belmont in 2013 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Grayson is currently the CEO at Poliana, a new startup providing a web application for political analysis.
Marcella Noorman graduated from Belmont in 2013 with a B.S. in Mathematics. Marcella continued her Mathematics studies in Budapest, Hungary during the summer of 2013 and is now in a Post Baccalaureate program at North Carolina State University during the 2013-14 school year.
Josh Sheehy graduated from Belmont in 2013 with a B.S. in Computer Science. He is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant while pursuing his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Texas A & M University.
Colin Hemphill graduated from Belmont in 2013 with a B.S. in Computer Science and Audio Engineering Technology. Colin in a Web Application Developer at Novation Mobile in Texas.
Kevin Crowl graduated from Belmont in 2013 with a B.A. in Mathematics and Secondary Education. Kevin is currently a mathematics teacher at North Akron Catholic School in Ohio.
Cory Hughes graduated from Belmont in 2012 with a B.S. in Computer Science and Audio Engineering Technology. Cory started as an IT intern and is now working as a Software Developer at Jackson National Life.
Trevor Hinesley graduated from Belmont in 2012 with a B.S. Computer Science and Audio Engineering Technology. Trevor is currently a Product Developer at RecruitTalk in Nashville, TN.
Kelly Harlan graduated from Belmont in 2011 with a B.A. in Mathematics. Kelly is currently a Help Desk Technician at SADA Systems, an information technology consulting, outsourcing and development firm in California.
Chris Driggers graduated from Belmont in 2011 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Chris is a Gameplay Scripter at Vicious Cycle Software, Inc. in North Carolina.
Matthew Lefavor graduated from Belmont in 2011 with a B.S. in Computer Science and Philosophy. Matthew began working as a Software Engineer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland after graduation. “Although my job title is "Software Engineer", in reality I have worn several hats throughout my career at NASA, from software development to software testing to hardware operations to UNIX administration. I was selected to join a small group of hardware wizards and scientists to operate the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument aboard the MSL “Curiosity” rover during the critical first 90 days of its mission.” Matthew has recently returned to Tennessee and is a Software Developer at Rustici Software.
Stephanie Bobo Hanson graduated from Belmont in 2011 with a B.S. in Mathematics. Stephanie completed her M.S. in Industrial Engineering at Clemson University and is currently working at Hubbell Power Systems in South Carolina.
Kurt Alexander graduated from Belmont in 2011 with a B.S. in Mathematics and Chemistry. Kurt worked as a Web Developer at United Methodist Communications while at Belmont and then went on to work as a Statistical Research Specialist for the State of Tennessee. He is now a Financial Analyst with Touchstone Medical Imaging.
Hank Carter graduated from Belmont in 2010 with a B.S. in Computer Science. Hank is pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science – Security at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.
Heather Ellis Pickard graduated from Belmont in 2010 with a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics. Heather was a Cyber Security Intern with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) while at Belmont and now works for the TVA as a Real-time Systems Analyst in Chattanooga. “I work for the Computer Engineering Group in TVA's Nuclear Power Group. We provide computer support to TVA's three nuclear facilities. I specialize in cyber security and am responsible for the administration and monitoring of the network intrusion detection systems. I am also heavily involved with the incident response process.”
Neil Kowalewski graduated from Belmont in 2009 with a B.S. in Mathematics. While at Belmont, Neil worked as an IT Software Developer Intern for AIM Healthcare. Neil worked as an Analyst at Asurion and is currently a Website/Application Developer at Atiba Software, LLC.
Matt Feury graduated from Belmont in 2009 with a B.S. in Mathematics and Audio Engineering Technology. Matt worked as a Software Engineer at OpenStudy.com for several years and is now a Software Engineer at Experience LLC in Atlanta, GA.
Allison Carrier graduated from Belmont in 2009 with a B.F.A. in Design Communications and Web Development. Allison is currently a User Interface Designer at Electronic Arts – Mythic Entertainment.
Ross Buffington graduated from Belmont in 2009 with a B.S. in Computer Science. After interning and working at InfoWorks, Inc., Ross is now a free-lance technical consultant and ASP.NET developer.
Ben Tate graduated from Belmont in 2008 with a B.S. in Computer Science. He received his Masters in Computer Science from MTSU in 2010. Ben is currently an Application Architect, on the Big Data Team, with American Express in Phoenix, AZ.
