David Moser, J.D.
I came to Belmont from varied experiences in the music industry,
most recently as an entertainment attorney. My initial goal in
going to college was to be a musician, but after realizing that I
wasn't overly talented in this respect, I decided to get
involved in the business side of the music business. As an
attorney, I've worked with artists, songwriters, managers,
producers, record companies and music publishers.
My main areas of expertise are copyright law and entertainment law. I frequently write articles and conduct seminars dealing with copyright law and the music business and have had a book published, Moser on Music Copyright, which is used as a text on copyright law by many music business programs. I've recently focused much of my research activities on intellectual property and piracy in Asia. I've received a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research on copyright enforcement and conduct seminars in the Philippines, taught a summer abroad course in China focusing on piracy issues, and have been invited to be a visiting professor at Lingnan University in Hong Kong in fall 2007.
The most enjoyable aspect of teaching to me is when I can help students to analyze a situation and start thinking about issues they haven't considered before. When students can actually apply information they've learned in a class rather than merely repeat it, I believe they've actually learned something of practical value and the ability to think critically will likely benefit them in whatever career they pursue.
Although somewhat of a workaholic by nature, in my spare time, I enjoy tennis, reading (mysteries, legal thrillers, etc.), photography, and playing the stereo.
