Summer Study Abroad in China
Tentative Dates: May 14 to June 1, 2007
Professors: Dr. David Moser (Entertainment/Music Business); Dr. Howard Cochran (Business); Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn (Philosophy)
Description: With a population of 1.3 billion, China presents an incredible and relatively new market in which foreign companies--including entertainment companies--can sell their products and services. However, almost 90% of the music, movies and other intellectual property-based products sold in China are pirated goods. This interdisciplinary course allows students to see firsthand the prevalence of piracy in China and to examine how China's history, culture and economy have influenced its conception of intellectual property. The course also focuses on general business issues in China and how China's history and culture affect business. Students will visit various Chinese businesses as well as historical and cultural sites (e.g. The Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, a Shaolin Monastery) in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities. Students receive 6 hours of course credit (at one-third the cost of regular Belmont summer tuition), and fulfill the Junior Cornerstone requirement (even if you're not a Junior). If you are interested in this program or have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. David Moser at moserd@mail.belmont.edu.
Additional Opportunities in Europe and Australia
Belmont offers summer programs in Australia and London in conjunction with CCSA, a consortium of schools who organize regular study abroad programs. On odd number years, "The European Music Business" is offered in London, and in even number years, "The Australian Music Business" is offered in Sydney. In addition, there are semester-long programs available in Australia and London, including internships that are coordinated by the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business. If you would like more information on or have questions about these programs, contact Dr. Wes Bulla at bullaw@mail.belmont.edu.
