Environmental Studies Program

Today's environmental issues demand active and integrated approaches to learning, discovery, and investigation in order to arrive at realistic solutions. Since environmental issues encompass a variety of scientific and policy-oriented topics, the structure of the Environmental Studies program provides students with a broad set of knowledge and skills. The program currently offers a major (B.S. or B.A.) and a minor.
Highlights of the Environmental Studies program include:
- Interdisciplinary Courses: A core set of interdisciplinary courses, supplemented with natural sciences and social sciences courses, provides students with a broad theoretical base.
- Science or Policy Track: Students specialize in either a science or policy track depending upon interests.
- Hands-On, In-the-Field Experiences: Labs & field trips infuse discovery and experimentation into the courses.
- Research or Internship: Completion of either a research project (science track) or internship (policy track) provides opportunities for students to investigate real-world environmental issues.
- Networking Opportunities: Connections with local environmental organizations, conservation groups, and legislative bodies, including the Washington Center, enables students to network with professionals in the field to prepare for graduate studies or careers in an environmental area.
- Senior Capstone: Students in both the science and policy tracks come together in the senior capstone course to integrate science and policy knowledge through the analysis of a local environmental problem.
