INT. DRESSING ROOM – DAY
NEWTON JASPER IV stands, looking into a mirror. He carefully examines his tuxedo, straightens his tie, and takes a deep breath.
You look dashing, fully capable.
Newton turns away from the mirror and looks at BETH, a middle-aged woman wearing a flowing gown.
Not sure about the capable part,
You look like your father.
I know he’s the last person you
want to think about today, but I
can’t help it. Mothers--we have
Tears are now welling in Beth’s eyes. Newton smiles warmly as he approaches her.
The wedding hasn’t even started,
and you’ve already ruined your
Leave me alone.
Newton is still smiling. Beth slowly regains her composure.
Let’s do this.
INT. CHURCH SANCTUARY – DAY
With a Bible in hand, the MINISTER stands between Newton and SARAH, his bride, at the front of the sanctuary.
I now pronounce you man and wife.
You may kiss the bride.
Newton and Sarah move toward each other, blocking the Minister from sight. It is now obvious that Sarah is pregnant. Her large, round belly distances her from Newton during the kiss.
Beth stands and smiles in the front row next to a man of similar age.
Introducing, for the very first
time, Mr. and Mrs. Newton Jasper
EXT. PARKING LOT – DAY
Newton and Sarah hurry through bubble-blowing family and friends towards a silver sedan. They enter the car and speed out of the parking lot.
INT. CAR – DAY
Newton now wears jeans and a flannel shirt. He grips the wheel tightly and glances frequently at Sarah. While breathing heavily, she holds her belly. The car stops.
What are you doing?!
It’s a red light.
EXT. INTERSECTION – DAY
The car races through the intersection, barely missing another car.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM- DAY
Newton sits nervously in a hospital room. Sarah is behind a curtain, birthing her child. After a baby cries, a young nurse approaches Newton.
It’s a boy. Congratulations.
Before Newton is able to respond, another nurse hands him a birth certificate.
Newton looks at it for a moment. On the line designated for the name, he writes “Newton Edward Jasper V.”
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – LATER
Newton holds his son, while Sarah sleeps nearby. Beth enters and catches Newton’s eye. She sits near him quietly. Newton shifts his attention to his son.
It’s strange, this fatherhood
thing. I feel like I’m holding
pure, unadulterated potential...
Right now, more than any other time
in his life, he can be anything- a
doctor or lawyer, an athlete or
artist. (Smirks) Hell, he could be
the next Einstein.
Beth smiles warmly.
Tomorrow, some path will be cut
off. And the next day, another.
Before you know it, he can’t be
Einstein ‘cause he didn’t get the
right schooling. He can’t be an
athlete-- he never developed the
competitive drive. Pretty soon he’s
left with a handful of options, and
they all involve an office cubicle.
You sure you’re still talking about
I just want to give him the best
set up I can. I want to keep as many options live as possible. I-- I want to be there.
You’re not your father.
Newton nods and returns his gaze to his son. Beth softly scratches his back with her hand.
INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY
YOUNG NEWTON is in a room with other kids and some adults. There is confetti and cake, and the kids wear party hats. A mime entertains some of the children in the corner.
Young Newton sees a man enter the room and smiles. Young Newton runs toward him. The man picks him up and then sets Newton on his lap in such a way that Newton is facing him.
INT. TWO-CAR GARAGE – NIGHT
Young Newton sits on the step leading to the house. One car is missing from the garage. Beth opens the door and crouches to his level. He looks at her and begins to cry. She holds him. Distant baby screams are heard (O.S.).
