Belmont University | Belief in Something Greater

Message from the Director

At its core, reading and writing open us up to the world, offering us a landscape of promises, challenges, and wonders. Here at Belmont’s Master’s of Arts in English program, we give students the opportunity to explore this landscape within a supportive intellectual community. Our knowledgeable faculty are passionate about learning and committed to fostering a dedicated community of students and colleagues.

We value individual curiosity, and our flexible program is designed to introduce students to a range of new ideas while allowing them to follow their own intellectual path. We offer emphases in literature, writing, and teaching, and allow students to explore all three of these interrelated fields throughout their course of study.

This flexibility leads to diverse and innovative work from our students, who have written accomplished thesis projects on a range of topics, from gender in the Arthurian cycle to prodigality in Marilyn Robinson’s Home. They’ve completed quantitative analyses of body language in writing centers, and collected oral accounts of women’s literacy in Ohio. They’ve written memoirs, short stories, and novels. In short, their work has taken them into the written word and into the world, helping them get started on the next step in their lives—wherever their paths have led.

Please take a moment to explore our website and learn a little more about our faculty, courses, and students. And we always welcome visitors to our program and in our classes. I look forward to hearing from you and to chatting with you about how we can help you pursue your passion for the written word.
