Program Structure

The Education licensure coursework is divided into three phases: the Education Core, the Curriculum and Instruction courses, and the semester of Clinical Practice.

Between each is a GATEWAY assessment in which our candidates demonstrate their knowledge from each phase. In addition, because our candidates are liberal arts education candidates with a second content major the total program includes the EDU courses, the BELL Core General Education courses, and the content major courses.

For candidates in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (Instrumental/General Music, Vocal/General Music, Theater Arts, and Visual Arts) most of their licensure education courses are delivered within their content major. In addition, their GATEWAY assessments are tailored to their particular area of study.

Tennessee Licensure and Reciprocity with other states

While more than 70 percent of all students enrolled at Belmont come from outside the state of Tennessee, our candidates are licensed in Tennessee and use the Tennessee reciprocity agreement to transfer their license back to another state, should they choose to leave Tennessee. The majority of our candidates are employed in Tennessee schools upon graduation.
