Theater Complex
A Theater Complex is an integral part of Belmont’s strategic plan to expand the physical campus to meet the needs of a growing student body and to provide students and faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance with a campus home suitable for its programs of distinction.
Upon completion, the Theater Complex will include:
- Bill and Carole Troutt Theater - a 350 seat proscenium theater equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and audio equipment. This theater will serve as both a performance and teaching facility. Click here to see renderings of the Bill and Carole Troutt Theater.
- Black Box Theater - a 100 to 150 seat theatre that will provide unique opportunities for students to explore forms of theater not confined by formal staging.
- Scene Shop and Dressing Rooms
In addition to the thirty-four performances held annually in our current facilities, the two new venues will allow us to add 2-3 musical theater productions, 2 opera productions, 2 dance concerts and multiple collaborations with outside professional theater and dance companies.
Currently, theater productions are presented in a makeshift rectangular area carved out of the basement of Hail Hall, the oldest residence hall on campus. While the space is intimate, it presents challenges for teaching, learning and performing. The facility’s poor lighting and acoustics, limited seating and obstructed views of the stage are not ideal for showcasing student performances to campus and community patrons of the performing arts.
With the new Theater Complex, students and faculty will be able to choose from a wide range of productions and will not be bound by set or light constraints, cast sizes and stage limitations. Providing more space will not only accomodate current theater and dance students but will also allow the University to recruit more talented students and expand their academic programs.
