Interested in joining the Belmont University Speech & Debate team?
We host open auditions for Belmont students at the beginning of the fall semester each year. Can’t wait until then? We occasionally audition high school students as well as Belmont students interested in joining the team outside of the fall audition period.
1. If you’re considering joining the team (even if you’re undecided), contact the faculty director, Jason Stahl. He’ll provide you with an email detailing everything you’ll need to know to help make your decision.
2. Ready to audition? There are multiple audition times to choose from throughout the first full week of class. Email the director and set up a time as well as request any audition materials/instructions that you may need.
3. All auditions will last 15-20 minutes. We’ll talk you through the team, who we are, and what we do to make sure that you’re ready to commit to an organization like this. While there is a definite time requirement, we feel that the payoff is well worth it.
4. Those auditioning to act/interpret literature will be asked to perform a short monologue that we will provide. Those auditioning for a debate spot will be provided with a prompt and asked to present an argument for/against the issue in question. Those auditioning for a public speaking focus can either audition with a pre-written speech (either full or partial, lasting 3-4 minutes) or with an impromptu prompt we will provide.
