spsconference

Students from the newly-formed Society of Physics Students (SPS) went on a trip to Fermilab, the Fermi National Accelerator Facility, outside of Chicago, IL November 7-9, 2008.  Students Caitlin Smith, Kayla LaFrance, Sarah-Ann Claiborne, Caleb Kinch and Stephen Murphree, along with Physics faculty Christian Thomas, Stephen Robinson and Scott Hawley, attended the Quadrennial Congress of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national honor society for physics students.  As this was the first trip for this new SPS group, and the first involvement in the congress, the trip was significant as a way of connecting students with the greater physics community.  The group attended talks and workshops on the topic of "scientific citizenship", including a keynote address by Nobel laureate Leon Lederman.  Other activities included touring the inspiring Adler Planetarium, and eating some great Chicago-style pizza.

SAACS (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society)

SAACS (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society) has an active chapter on campus and was selected to receive a Commendable Award for its activities conducted during the 2007-08 academic year! Lists of award winning chapters will be published in Chemical & Engineering News and in in Chemistry. These chapters will also be honored at the 237th ACS National Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT in March 2009. Dr. Alison Moore and Dr. Rachel Rigsby are the faculty advisors. Students involved in SAACS have participated in the following activities:

  • attended regional and national ACS (American Chemical Society) meetings
  • visited local high schools to present Chemistry demonstrations
  • offered convocation programs on campus as part of National Chemistry Week
  • participated in Explorations in Chemistry --- High School Chemistry Day at Belmont
  • participated in CSI Week at Belmont and CSI: Belmont......Whodunnit?
The Belmont chapter of SAACS has entered a video in the ACS Presidential Video Challenge. The videos are to reach out to elementary and middle school students and help them develop an awareness of who chemists are and to understand how important chemistry is to their lives. Awards will be announced at the end of 2008. Here is the link to Belmont’s SAACS video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKr__4TXV9g
