The Curb Café stage provides Belmont students and up-and-coming local musicians a place to showcase their talents with shows every Monday through Saturday during the academic year. In addition, it’s a great location for community and campus organization meetings, banquets, and other special events.
CURB CAFÉ IMPACT ON BELMONT STUDENTS
Educational Objectives of the Curb Cafe
As a student run concert venue the Curb Café helps further the college’s goals by giving students opportunities to perform, to practice booking and promoting shows, to manage events (including budget management), and to deliver live sound.
ASCAP Writers’ Night Series: An Ongoing Special Event
ASCAP sponsors a six-show Writers’ Night Series in the Curb Cafe, giving nine Belmont student songwriters an opportunity to perform alongside an established guest writer in front of the campus community and music industry professionals. The series is organized and produced by two Curb College students who are responsible for everything from the audition and selection process and coordination of judging panels, to production of the live show. This year, the Journalism department filmed the live events and conducted studio interviews with three of the nine writers, creating a one hour show that served as a class project for two Journalism majors and may eventually air campus television and other media outlets.
Booking and Event Management
A team of CEMB students learn the ropes of small venue and special event management by assisting with all aspects of booking, promotion, advertising and production.
Live Sound: Curricular Ties
Curb Café serves as a learning lab for students in two Audio Engineering courses that emphasize practical sound reinforcement applications, terms and definitions as well as leadership and teamwork on the sound reinforcement crew. Since students from each class work every Curb Café show, the availability this on-campus venue provides nearly 100 students with an ideal location for practicing the hands-on applications they learn in the classroom.
