Mark Volman, M.F.A.
Hello everyone, my name is Mark Volman. I am a founding member, vocalist, and manager of the musical group, The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie. I am hopeful that you have heard at least one of my songs: Happy Together, She’d Rather Be With Me, It Ain’t Me Babe, You Showed Me and Elenore. In the 70's, our band found itself in huge legal issues with our record label, so I joined and made 10 albums with Frank Zappa & the Mother's of Invention, as well as sang with other artists such as John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, T.Rex, Linda Ronstadt, Roger McGuinn and many more. I have worked in television as a writer and performer for CBS, NBC and the CBC in Canada. I have also written songs for children’s television shows, and records, such as the Care Bears, G.I. Joe and Strawberry Shortcake, receiving a Grammy nomination for these works. After having won our band name back in 1979, we continue to tour as The Turtles, performing 50+ concerts every year.
At the age of 44, I decided to enroll in college for the first time. I did my studies in Communications at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude and Valedictorian in 1997. While touring and teaching at LMU, I finished my Masters in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Film Studies and Screenwriting.
This fall, I have accepted the position as an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Entertainment Industry Studies program at Belmont University in the Mike Curb School of Entertainment and Music Business. I am now currently on the Board of Directors in Nashville for Leadership Music and also an active member of NARAS, MEIEA, BMI, the College Music Society, AFTRA, SAG and Local 47 Musician’s Union. I also enjoy working with young singers and songwriters through my Music Business Consulting Firm, ProfessorFlo.com. My wife, Emily is a professional singer, comedienne and Managing Director of Improv Nashville. Emily and I enjoy spending time with our dogs, Josie and Jasper, and working as Youth Advisors at our church, Harpeth Presbyterian in Brentwood.
