John Ouellette

John OuelletteA Massachusetts native, John Ouellette started his career in the music industry by playing with various bands in Boston and the surrounding area.  John earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, where his studies included courses in music business.  Those music business courses sparked John’s passion for music publishing.  The desire to work in music publishing ultimately led him to the Nashville area, where he has lived for over 20 years.  John has worked in the music industry for the entire time he has lived in Middle Tennessee.  He worked in music publishing for over 10 years handling every aspect of publishing administration; from filing copyright applications, interacting with foreign sub-publishers, and negotiating and issuing licenses, to processing royalties and drafting and negotiating songwriter agreements.  Most of John’s time in music publishing was spent working for one of the oldest and largest Christian music publishing companies in Nashville, Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing (formerly Benson Music Group and currently part of Capitol CMG).  John graduated from law school and passed the Tennessee Bar Exam in 2006, and has been a practicing Entertainment Attorney ever since.  He represents record labels, publishing companies, trade organizations, artists, songwriters and producers.  John has been a member of the Country Music Association, Gospel Music Association, Tennessee Bar Association, Nashville Bar Association, American Bar Association and Copyright Society of the South.  He also participates in a group of local music publishers, publishing administrators and attorneys that have prepared responses to questions proposed by the United States Copyright Office as part its Music Licensing Study.  John lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife and children.
