Trevor Hutchins
Trevor Hutchins (Ph.D.) has been a teacher and teacher educator for over thirty years. Dr. Hutchins originally trained as an elementary teacher and then completed a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Psychology, at Monash University, Australia. While teaching school, he completed a Master of Education at Monash University and was subsequently appointed to a lectureship in Education, at Burwood State College. While at Burwood he lectured in most aspects of Educational Psychology. His areas of special focus include social psychology, developmental psychology, professional development, and teaching and learning.
Dr. Hutchins went on to complete an M.A. in the Psychology of Education at London University and a Ph.D. at Indiana University, majoring in Instructor Behavior and Organization Behavior. He has worked extensively as a consultant in both schools and business with an emphasis on leadership and aspects of staff development ranging from mentoring and team building to personal development planning.
Dr. Hutchins has been very active in a number of professional organizations, frequently holding state and national office. He has been a member of the national executive of the Australian Teacher Education Association, and on the state executive of the Australian Institute for Training and Development. He is currently the Middle Tennessee Representative on TACTE and Member at Large of ANACTE.
Prior to moving to Belmont, Dr. Hutchins was a Principal Lecturer in Education at Deakin University, Victoria, Australia. Deakin University was one of the largest providers of teacher education in Victoria, graduating 500 undergraduates and 50 Masters and Ph.D. students per year. At Deakin, he was responsible for the redevelopment of large sections of the undergraduate teacher education program. The program was redesigned to make optimal use of technology and to allow both on and off-campus students to exercise more control over their own learning.
Dr. Hutchins' consultancy activities include working with schools on the development of their School Development Plans, personal development plans for teachers and the development of school leaders. In business, he has consulted with banks, insurance companies and retail organizations in the areas of leadership development, time management and project planning.
At Belmont, Dr. Hutchins has worked with the teacher education and faculty in the local schools and to move much of the teacher education program into the schools and to extend Belmont's reputation in both undergraduate and graduate teacher education.
