Belmont University is committed to extending the boundaries of education through experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and to focus and solidify their professional goals and career paths; and give sponsoring organizations the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent. Students work under the guidance of a faculty advisor and a company supervisor. Internships are required to have career-oriented learning outcomes designed in cooperation with his/her faculty advisor and company supervisor.
Students who accept unpaid internships must be registered for course credit. Students who accept paid internships are not required to register for course credit, but have the option to earn course credit if desired.
Students may only receive course credit during the semester when they intern. Credit is not awarded retroactively. The internship must relate to the student’s educational and/or career goals. Sponsoring organizations must be willing to enter the training agreement with Belmont University and complete an evaluation of the intern’s performance at the end of the semester.
It is the responsibility of the company or organization (internship site) to make certain the internship is in compliance with applicable wage and hour laws in operating its internship program. If interns are used as employees, interns are required to earn at least minimum wage.
