Course Syllabus

MODULE 1 (4.5 Hours)
GMAT Overview and Half-Length Practice Test. Course syllabus; instructor expectations. Orientation to GMAT and Education Testing Service (ETS). How the GMAT is scored. General strategies for maximizing GMAT paper-based and computer-based test performance. Setting individual performance objectives. Half-length paper-based GMAT practice test; interpretation of results.


MODULE 2 (3 Hours)
Reading Comprehension. Overview of reading material and question types. ETS biases, Understanding ETS explanations of reading comprehension solutions. Strategies differentiated by reading-skill level. Effective techniques for identifying 'credited' answers from factual, structural, and contextual clues. Inferences. Practice Reading Comprehension test and interpretation of results.


MODULE 3 (4.5 Hours)
Quantitative Problem- Solving 1. Overview of problem solving question types. Understanding ETS explanations of problem- solving solutions. Terms used in quantitative problems. Arithmetic, number concepts, and operations with signed integers, fractions, and decimals. Number lines. Practical approaches to utilizing mathematical concepts to solve problems.


MODULE 4 (3.5 Hours)
Quantitative Problem Solving 2. Estimating, percentages, averages, ratios and proportions. Efficient approaches to conceptualizing information and developing solution strategies. Practice Problem- Solving quiz; initial individual problem-solving strategy refinement.


MODULE 5 (3 Hours)
Sentence Correction. ETS 'rules' governing correct and effective expression. Understanding ETS Explanations of sentence correction solutions. Parallelism, subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement, verb tense, modification, comparison, and idioms. Techniques for recognizing question types and identifying 'credited' answers. Practice Sentence Correction quiz and interpretation of results.


MODULE 6 (3.5 Hours)
Quantitative Problem Solving 3. Algebra, powers and roots, and simplification of expressions. Solving linear equations in 1 and 2 variables; quadratic equations; statistics; counting methods. Drill in efficient solution strategies.


MODULE 7 (3.5 Hours)
Quantitative Problem Solving 4. Solving word problems with tables and equations. Sets, data interpretation, and probability. Geometry terms and concepts. Efficient techniques for solving problems containing parallel lines, triangles, polygons, circles, composite figures, and figures in 3 dimensions. Analytic Geometry.


MODULE 8 (2 Hours)
Quantitative Problem-Solving Practice Test. Thirty-minute quantitative test covering all 10 types of problem-solving questions and GMAT mathematics concepts. Interpretation of results; final individual problem-solving strategy refinement.


MODULE 9 (1 Hour)
Directed Practice in Analysis of Issue/Analysis of Argument Essay Writing. Overview of recommended approaches to GMAT essays. Structuring and executing the essay using cogent examples. Scoring of (optional) student essays written outside of class, with brief written recommendations for improvement of strategy, organization, and content.


MODULE 10 (4 Hours)
Data Sufficiency. Application of arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and word- problem principles to the troublesome Data Sufficiency section of the GMAT. Practice Data Sufficiency test; interpretation of results and individual strategy refinement.


MODULE 11 (3 Hours)
Critical Reasoning, Stated and implied premises, assumptions, argument construction and interpretation, inference, and parallel reasoning. Understanding ETS explanations of critical reasoning solutions. Team-generated approaches and strategies. Practice Critical Reasoning test; interpretation of results and individual strategy refinement.


MODULE 12 (5 Hours)
Post-Course Practice Test. Administration of full-length GMAT. Brief individual written analysis of exam results and recommendations for final GMAT preparation.
