Accelerated MBA Program

The Accelerated Master of Business Administration (Accelerated MBA) Program is a new program being launched for the 2009-10 academic year. The Accelerated MBA is designed for talented individuals with little or no full-time business work experience and who want to either reposition themselves for a career in business or accelerate the rate of advancement in their chosen field of business.  The program is designed so that an individual who has the necessary prerequisite preparation, can complete the program in twelve months.

The Accelerated MBA is offered as a full-time MBA program that is both academically challenging and fast-paced.  It is not designed for individuals who are working full-time.  Students begin course work in the Fall semester and complete the program that following Summer term.

Curriculum.  Accelerated MBA students take their required business core courses together as a cohort (25-30 students).  Students complete an MBA business core that includes content coverage in each of the basic functional areas of business:  accounting, business law, finance, management, marketing, business  technology , and strategic management, plus required courses in other critical areas such as leadership.  Part of what also makes the Massey MBA different, though, is its threading of business ethics, entrepreneurial thinking, and international business concepts throughout the program.  And Massey is one of only a handful of MBA programs in the U.S. that requires an international business study-abroad experience (MGT 6350) of each student prior to graduation.

Accelerated MBA students have the ability to select from a wide range of graduate business electives which can be used to customize their degree programs.  Similar to the PMBA program, Accelerated MBA students may choose from seven elective concentrations, including:   accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, healthcare management, marketing or music business - or a student can choose a general business concentration that offers maximum flexibility by combining those electives that best fit one’s desired career path.   Click here for MBA degree requirements

All Accelerated MBA courses are offered in a Monday through Thursday evening format from 6:15 to 9:00 p.m.—a schedule designed to allow daytime hours for class work and fulfilling any part-time/internship work requirements.

Student Profile.  The average AMBA student for Fall 2009:

  • Is 24 years old
  • Has Less than 2 years of full-time significant business work experience prior to admission
  • Completed an undergraduate degree
  • Earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.1
  • Earned an average GMAT score of 530
  • Enrolled in an average of 12 MBA credits per semester (a 1-year program completion pace)

Experience.   Accelerated MBA students are not required to have full-time work experience prior to being admitted to the program.  However, as with any MBA program, any business experience, including part-time experience and student internships will pay dividends for the Accelerated MBA student and is certainly encouraged.  To assure a minimum of work experience prior to graduation, Accelerated MBA students will be required to complete a significant internship/work experience course component during the program as part of the required curriculum.  The COBA Career Services will assist each Accelerated MBA student in meeting this program requirement.

Flexibility.   Although the lockstep, full-time format of the Accelerated MBA is not as flexible as a part-time program would allow, each student maintains significant flexibility in terms of how their program is structured.  In addition to selecting up to four electives (8 out of a total of 34 credits) from Massey MBA offerings, Accelerated MBA students also have the option of selecting from a minimum of three international trip options for their MGT 6350 – International Study Abroad course offering.

Personal Touch.  An additional characteristic that sets The Massey School apart from many of its peers is the personal attention given to each student’s learning needs.  Enrollments are managed to assure small class sizes (average of 25-30 in core classes and average of 13-15 in electives) so that students have significant opportunities to interact with each professor and their peers.  All program faculty are deeply committed to making sure that each student’s learning environment is an effective one for that individual.
