First-Year Seminar
With a group of fellow freshmen, you will explore broad questions like 'What is knowledge?' and acquire the skills to take full advantage of your university experience - all as part of an intriguing class focused on a real-world issue like global warming, women in politics, race and poverty, ethics in corporate America, theories of humor, or any number of other topics. In addition, all first-year students read and analyze a common book as part of this seminar. A sample of first-year seminar titles include:
- 'The Role of Visual Art in the Construction of Meaning'
- 'The Map is Not the Land: The Voyage of Knowledge' 'Knowing When to Laugh: The Epistemology of Humor'
- 'Ways of Knowing: What's Past is Prologue'
- 'Denying The Holocaust: How We Know What Isn't So'
- 'How Do You Talk to An Alien?'
- 'What Do You Know about Thyself?'
