Rules

THE TEAM
Teams will be made up of 2-4 players. Two (2) players will compete on a side; others will be available as substitutes. Substitutes may enter the game only during timeouts or in the case of injury. A team may start with as few players as they wish, but the maximum number of players in the game is 2 per team.

THE EQUIPMENT
The official ball used in tournament and league play will be an 3, 4' rubber-coated foam ball.

THE GAME
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them 'OUT'. This may be done by: 1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball below the shoulders. 2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground.  Players are not allowed to jump off the walls while the ball is in play.

Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched the floor/ground or ceiling.  Therefore a single throw can hit more than one person and get them out. However many people the ball hits before it hits the ground or ceiling, will all be called out.

BOUNDARIES
2 on 2 Dodgeball will be played inside a racquetball court. If you cross into the neutral zone any other time besides the opening rush, you will be eliminated.

  OPENING THE GAME
At the start of the game, one team will pick odds/evens and whoever wins will start with 2 balls and other team will start with one ball.  The team that started with two balls for the first game, will begin the 2nd game with 1 one and will alternate for every game after that.

TIMING AND WINNING A GAME
The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 10 minute time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the 10 minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. Each series will be played to the best of 7. Teams will switch sides between each game of the series. In the case of an equal number of players remaining after regulation, a 1-minute sudden-death overtime period will be played.

TIME-OUTS & SUBSTITUTIONS
Each team will be allowed one (1) 30 second timeout per game. At this time a team may substitute players into the game. A player who has been knocked out may not substitute in for a player who is still in the game. Only players who have not previously played in the game may substitute in during the timeout.

5-SECOND VIOLATION
In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all (3) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds.  After that 5 second count, if the balls have not been thrown the balls will be divided evenly between the teams.

HEADSHOTS
If a player is hit in the head by a ball thrown by an opposing player, then the thrower is called out. If a player ducks to dodge a ball and is hit in the head, then they will be eliminated.

RULE ENFORCEMENT
During pool play or regular-season matches, rules will be enforced primarily by the 'honor system'*. Players will be expected to rule whether or not a hit was legal or whether they were legally eliminated. All contests will be supervised by a court monitor*. The court supervisor responsibility will be to rule on any situation in which teams cannot agree. THE COURT SUPERVISOR'S DECISION IS FINAL NO EXCEPTIONS.

JUMP THROWS
It is legal for a player to jump in the air to throw the ball. If that player jumps over the neutral zone line, the throw must be released before the player comes to the ground across the line in order for that to be a legal throw. If that player lands across the neutral zone line they will be out.

DIVING OR SLIDING
There will be no diving or sliding allowed for any reason. A player that dives or slides will be eliminated. This includes falling down. If a player dodges a ball and in the process falls to the ground, then they will be called out.

OVERTIME

However many players that were left on the court at the end of regulation play; stay on the court for a 1 minute, sudden death, overtime.  Each team will start with one foot on the back wall.  Both teams will have 2 balls to start with.  First team to eliminate any player from the opposing team will be declared the winner.  No time-outs.  No subs.  If, in the event of no player being eliminated during the overtime period, one player will be added to each team with a maximum of 2.
