A DELICATE BALANCE AND NOTIONS OF MULTIPLICITY: PAINTINGS BY CAROL MODE

SUMMARY:
In my paintings I am looking for 'spaces in the mind,' mental maps full of visual information. The method I use employs patterns and locaters as each mark may re-appear in discrete layers. The creating of each layer resembles a building process with uncovering, excavating and rebuilding of images on the surface. In constructing my paintings, I make decisions continuously. I am interested in the challenge of turning a process of revealing and obscuring forms in space into a commentary on decisions that affect interactions of vision and place.

My plan for many years to come is to continue to develop the complex play between pieces which work with visual distortion and unpredictability as is based on my ever-changing vision. The work will focus on the idea of vision which goes beyond 'lens-based focus,' under conceptual control.
