Stephanie Buckhanon Crowder, an ordained Baptist and Disciples of Christ minister, teaches New Testament Studies. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree summa cum laude in Speech Pathology/Audiology from Howard University and was the Student Commencement Speaker. She received her Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Religion from Vanderbilt University.
Her published dissertation is Simon of Cyrene: A Case of Roman Conscription. She has also published in The African American Pulpit, Women at the Well (Volume 2), The People's Bible, and The Chalice Introduction to the New Testament. Her work on the Gospel of Luke can be found in True to Our Native Land: An African American New Testament Commentary. Dr. Crowder wrote A Faith-Based Curriculum for Addressing Substance Abuse for the Congress of National Black Churches and contributed to the inaugural edition of The African American Lectionary, an online sermon resource. She was recently featured as a "New Scholar" in The African American Pulpit (Fall 2008). Her research interests include cultural studies, the Bible in pop culture, and womanist maternal theology.
Dr. Crowder was a Fund for Theological Education Dissertation Fellow as well as a Fellow for the Wabash Center for Teaching and Religion. She received a Louisville Institute Summer Grant and a Belmont University Teaching Center Travel Grant. In addition to serving in the academy, she spends time speaking to various civic and religious organizations.
Dr. Crowder enjoys reading, Zumba classes, listening to music and spending time with her family. Her husband is an ordained minister, and they have two sons.
